Close to five years past and the palm nursery is getting there. I would say 60 percent was started from seed and the other 40 percent from mostly bare rooted purchased seedlings. When I first started the project I knew it would take around 5 years before you can really do anything with the plants, from planting them in the ground to seller a few of them. It is a love of growing palms and plants that drives me to succeed in such a project, and now there is no stopping all I can do now is grow from strength to strength and build another greenhouse to fill it with more palms. So if you’re wondering how long it takes to build up a palm nursery at least five years.

Is that the potting bench I'm going to sleep under during my apprenticeship? Seriously that looks great and you're running a hell of an operation.

No you get the hothouse, at least you will be dry that way. I have worked in the horticultural industry for the last 35 years and my economy to scale is rather large after working on commercial large scale orchards. And I think I have learnt a trick or two over the years. But on the plus side for your apprenticeship ther3 will be no weeding to do as I don’t have a nursery full of weeds in my pot. So that means more watering for you your job just got easier.

Well we haven’t negotiated the payment yet. But iam sure seeds will be fine, I don’t know what you where thinking sancho gets the master bedroom and the run of the show while we work. And it’s an all you can eat burrito festival for sure, might even throw in a few fish fingers on Friday night if production has been good, but the accounting department decision to make!

What you gotta ask yourself is do you want to go back? I meet a lot backpackers at work and 99 percent of them dont want to leave Australia. One good thing about being at the bottom of the world fresh air and blue skies. And some of the best beaches around with not a single sole on!

Richard, I have always dreamed, since I was young, of changing profession and opening a nursery, spending all day outdoors and in contact with plants would have been fantastic

You’ve got a great setup Richard.

I’ve got to build my self a good grow on area. My shadehouse which is 120m2 is overflowing. I literally can’t walk from one end to the other.

It’s strange that I live the life that you dreamed. I also think about what if I had a different career doing some mega job halfway around the globe in some office, yet iam fortunate enough to live a blessed life with plants and Mother Nature in a beautiful garden. I created my ideas of paradise on earth in my mind and look at it daily in what I have created of my life!

Thanks Tim. It’s a love of palms and plants that drives me. All 4 of my greenhouses are full with little walking tracks. But it gets better iam building another one the size you see in the video. I know how you’re feeling!

Wow i wondered why you had so many "pot up" vids. I worked for a pretty big grower in Tawakoni Texas in my 20s. How many hours did i spend watering, grading plants, pulling weeds and shuffling them around (3 1 gal pots per hand!). Mostly hardy perennials and trees but i got them to start growing at least a few palms before i left!

That is great you can offer some really rare variety! I would love to visit if i ever make it!

Good luck on your investment!

Thanks it’s a love palms and plants that’s my main passion for growing them. Plus I get to pick out the best for my garden. Watering is a big job in summer. I don’t do a lot of weeding simply because I don’t let them into my nursery if I see a tiny weed I get it, iam constantly monitoring for weeds most of the time iam in the greenhouse simply not letting them in is the key. I don’t know how many’s varieties I have but there’s room for more that’s for sure! And if your ever in the neighbourhood drop in the first palm is free.
It’s a ten year  project leading into retirement funds!

If only there was a train went there from here as flying has become such a drag, i avoid it now.

There was a pop seed weed grew in our houses that (along with a few others) if i had a dime for all i pulled i could have retired back then! Jeez But luckily we did not use so many herbicides but Dursban was a common odor! We had tremendous invasion of fireants back then that had gradually migrated to the State in thise days. I did not aee any at my home until the late 90s! Awful little monsters up here! I bet Auzzie's have a similar issue as your critters are indeed nightmarish!

Weeds are major problem in agriculture and one of the biggest exspensives in labour and chemicals. Fire ants have just started to become a problem in the areas near the states borders, south of Brisbane aireal chemical control by the department of primary industries (government agriculture department) and let’s just say the community is not to happy about the use of chemicals being dropped all over the place. Fire ants cane toads noxious weeds are here to stay unfortunately control is the only measure on a losing battle unfortunately.
