It’s been more than 40 years since I came to California and back then all the palms were new at least to me.

It just happened that right about that time palms as a group became cool landscape plants, including for office parks and shopping malls. (Remember those?)

Different kinds got popular in waves; back 120 years ago Washingtonias were the thing and you still see them today, lining the big booleys, along with CIDPs.

By the time I got here in the 80s, queen palms were all the rage, and I got caught up in the fever too.

I still remember going to a Pacific Nurserymen Association show in LA and the Majesty palm was being offered for sale for the first time I can recall.

Anyone else have similar memories? Share! If you dare.

For me , it was 1990 . We bought our first home after over a dozen years of living on a sailboat. It was a really cool 950 square foot bungalow home built in 1961. It had a huge , deep lot , and a large swimming pool . The landscaping was bad. My wife said “ we need a palm tree to go with the pool”. We visited a nursery in Ventura , the manager happened to be a collector . We loved the look of the Queen Palm even though the manager tried to steer us in a different direction . I am a typical collector personality and soon I had several palms , built a green house and turned the side of the house into a lath house. I started hanging out at the nursery as a few folks from the Palm Society would bring rare seedlings in and the manager would sell them for 5-10 bucks each . I went all in the Palm thing . Harry

Lytocarum weddlianum when I was about 18 it was a new palm in my area. But it was hidden in the back of big kentia nursery. And only the boss knew what he had keeping them a secret selling them to collectors for big bucks. I asked to buy one, he looked at me and said you have a good eye for palms, and then he proceeded to tell about how rare and exotic they were and that they came from Brazil. I did buy for $150 bucks  a 140mm container. I walked away with one of his newly imported seedlings. Thinking wow what a palm I just scored. Now every collector under the sun has one and your very lucky if you sell one to a collector let alone try and give them one.

That giant majesty palm at the show way was in a fifty gallon tub and stood like 15 feet tall plus the crown.

Even Palm haters swooned.
