B. yatay x Jubaea need a new home asap. NC

Recommended Posts

Posted

This should probably go in the for sale section, but I figured it would get more traction here.

Wilmington NC,  B. yatay x Jubaea.  Probably 5' overall bragging height.

Still at the stage where it gets some winter damage on the emerging fronds, but hasn't had spear pull.

I sold my home, and I am moving to the great white nort.  Obviously can't take it with me.  I'd rather see it go to someone who is as stoked about growing it as I am/was, than leave it to be cut down by someone who dosent know how special it is.

I negotiated keeping this one with the buyer, but it needs to go asap. (Dug and hole filled by June 1)

PM me.  You dig (I can help).  If you gave me the 50 bucks I paid for it as a seedling, I'd be stoked.

Let’s talk about the Nitida…lol

When are you moving?

Needs to be out of the ground and hole filled with dirt by June 2nd.

I dug a couple of things before listing the house, but it was a pretty fast process and I ran out of time.  The rest of the landscaping has to stay (nitida, assorted trachys and hybrids, countless flowering hardy tropicals).  I specifically negotiated keeping the Jub x and an arucaria.  The arucaria might survive (hoping to move to coastal zone 7a) but the Jub x needs a southern home.

No takers yet.  Also the price (adoption fee) is quite negotiable.. haha

I can be there Friday morning if there's no other takers?  Would love to add it to my home collection, and keep it going in NC.
I have some 20 gallon pots i think would hold it?  Would you need the dirt to fill in as well?  i can fill up the pot before leaving.
Could possible do Saturday morning, but weekday would def be better.  Just let me know.

Such a cool hybrid - hopefully you or another can rescue it.

I assume it should eventually grow out of getting that winter spear damage.  Much like how a smaller standard Butia or Trachycarpus will get some damage when small here, but grow out of that when they put on some size.  This hybrid actually grows reasonably fast.

A little chronicle of the day.   It held up well on hwy 40, and I got it in ground right as it started to rain.

Thanks @Joe NC

I also had both.  Was marked from Patrick as B x J.  The J x B died almost instantly when planted into the ground.   It is a very Jubaea heavy looking cross.  Hooks and everything.

Jxb is greener then my bxj …if that’s a trait 😂.  Jxb has more  pronounced “veins” at the base the petioles from my observations

Sharing some progress pics after about 2 weeks. Def going through shock after transplant. A lot of the lower fronds are losing color. But..I think it’s beautiful.
Also showing off the hooked-ends in pics!

What a pretty palm. It’s right beside the entrance to the pool, and adjacent to my parking spot. I couldn’t decide on a “showcase” palm for this spot, but figured a butia shape would fit the area well…

it felt like a sign when I saw Joe’s post. For 1, I’d stalked his Nitida and Mule for a while, and loved the idea of seeing them in person. 2, it’s exactly what I was looking for.

this is zone 8a, outside of Raleigh. I’m planning to protect this palm for a year or 2, and see how it does. It’s about 20 ft from my home weather station. It hit 13F last year. And upper teens 3-4 times.

Great palm. I have this hybrid too and they transplant well. Just make sure not to over or under-water. Keep it moist and it'll start taking off soon!

Okay with these pics it looks more bxj than the other ones. Looks fantastic.

bxj seems to have more of a blueish hue to it than jxb.

the hooks are impressive, mine has nothing that aggressive.  This palm is larger than mine however. So mine might develop them later.

I would  plan on protecting it for two years up there.

thanks for sharing and keep us updated.

Almost 2 months in. We are hosting a big party this weekend so I decided to give it a haircut. Most of the bottom fronds had succumbed to transplant shock anyways.

also, the first full pinnate has pushed out, featuring its trademark hooks! It’s had noticeable growth day-over-day in the summer.  Can’t thank @Joe NC enough for this beautiful plant.

Today is a new day!

We cleared 15-20 mature pines on the south side of my house.  Mostly because of the danger they were becoming to the home, but the added sunlight is a plus! I knew i would be clear cutting this area when i planted the palm, so it was part of my long-term calculations on where to plant it.  In the summer, it should add about 2-3 hours mid-day sun each day.

I don't take it lightly cutting down these large trees.  How could you, if you love the world.
But they were a legitimate danger to our home.  The 2 i'll post are about 80-90 ft tall and probably 50 ft from the house.
You can see the palm in the lower left of the first video.

Obviamente no puedo llevármela.

What a spectacular aerial view, my friend.

I took a pause from thinking about palms until the reality of my return to the north set in.  I am very happy that my favorite palm found a home and I can check back in from time to time.

I am also closing on a house in a couple of weeks, and I did manage to land in the coastal strip of 7a that I was aiming for.

Also, I dug up and brought a Trachy hybrid with me.  It got stuck in a shipping container with all of my stuff for over 30 days.  What was supposed to take up to 10 days for moving all of my stuff ended up not...  Shockingly it didn't seem too upset by the dark, and thr pale fronds it pushed while in storage greened up when slowly transition back to the light.

Im going to end up putting it in the ground in a strong bout of zone denial then box it every winter....

I also need to get my hands on some needles, unfortunately I didn't dig up any before leaving NC.
