I just bought two Florida Thatch palms on clearance at Lowe’s and they seem relatively healthy. I am leaving to go up north for the summer and was just going to leave them in their original pots until I come back and then put them in the ground so as they are not trying to establish themselves in the middle of the heat of the summer. Will they be OK in the original pot for five months?

Will someone be watering them every few days?  If so, they’ll like be fine.  If not, they have a better chance in the ground with summer rains.  As native palms, they are pretty tolerant to Florida’s drought conditions and soils.

Thank you! They will get hit with the irrigation twice a week for 45 minutes either in the ground or in the pot.

If you have your spot, I’d put them in the ground.  They will be a lot happier.  They can sit in the pot for a long time with watering and some fertilizer if you want.  They tend to outgrow their pot about every year or so.  They can tolerate full, all day sun but look better with some shade during part of the day.  These are in pots and came as little babies from Home Depot a few years ago.  Saving them for the backyard remodel.  I flood them with water all the time.  They dry out quickly in their pots.

If those are the palms, I can tell you with certainty that no overhead water will land in the pots; none.

Find permanent spots in the yard and start digging.
