These are pindo + jubaea hybrid seeds I bought. They are very small and that concerns me. I added a dime and two pure butia seeds for comparison.

I paid a lot for these, is there any hope they'll germinate? =(

You can cut one open and have a look. Or just  sow them and go with what the gods offer in the germination department. Patience is the key.

I thought about doing that! Because of the price and how tiny they are I'd hate to waste one lol.

I will definitely being sowing them all with a prayer.

I forgot to mention these are F2s, the parent tree was a hybrid. I know sometimes hybrids can have fertility issues though I know this pairing is often fertile

My understanding is that Butia x Jubaea F2 seed (from an F1 BxJ parent) should be larger than pure Butia due to Jubaea influence. These are very small, which makes me think they aren’t viable. If they were mine, I would dry them for a few weeks, then gently crack them in a vice to see what’s inside.

FYI, I believe most F1 Butia x Jubaea hybrids are self-sterile so unless they have another cocoid palm nearby/manually pollinated, it’s unlikely the seed would be viable.

For those of you that frequent Facebook, I’ve set up a group called “Pommy palms”, where many of the palms I’ve seen since emigrating to Australia have been documented. If you wish to be a member, copy and paste “Pommy palms” into Facebook to view the page and click “Join group”.
