Ceroxylon amazonicum Question

Featured Replies

I’ve had this young C. amazonicum in the ground about three and a half years and came out of a 4” container. My question for anyone else growing this species is yours growing painfully slowly like this one. It seems to grow at the same speed in the winter as it does in the summer. Pictures too please!

I just got a small C. amazonicum that I'm trying to figure out where to plant. Does anyone know if they can take direct sun when young? I have a C. quindiuense that's in direct sun for most of the day and seems very happy.

Here's a pic of the C. amazonicum that's growing in the SF Botanical Garden in very deep shade. It's about 4 feet tall overall, apparently it was accessioned in 2008 but I don't know how long it's been in the ground in that spot.

Mine gets some direct winter sun but is shaded the rest of the year. Not sure how much summer sun they tolerate. My 15 year old C. quindiuence receives some straight summer sun and tolerates it well even during occasional heat waves that can  reach 100°F. My fastest growing Ceroxylon is alpinum (currently about ten feet tall no trunk) and it’s in partial to full shade.

Dave, I’m hoping mine grows like that eventually!

You may be too warm for them; I gave one to a guy in Venice and it seemed to appreciate the relatively cool conditions there.

My place is hardly the desert, but it gets hot spells in summer and fall, over 100. Venice rarely gets even close to that.

Dave, Definitely a bit warmer here than Venice, CA in the summer but not hot. The SF Bay usually keeps us out of the heat. We do get maybe three heat waves in the summer when it gets into the mid 90s and maybe one that reaches 100°F but most temperatures don’t deviate much from the averages on the chart below. My other Ceroxylon species are growing well and for many years as are Hedescepe, Rhopalostylis and other cool climate palms. :)

Ceroxylon here resist in winter, but die in summer, they cannot tolerate the African heat that reaches southern Europe in summer

GIUSEPPE

I had the ladder out to trim Caryota boots so here's a view from above!  The one on the left is amazonicum and on the right is ceriferum. Probably about 3 or 4 metres tall from seed around 2010.  Access to plenty of moisture most of the year and part sun but no fert.  However it's siblings are very much smaller due to being planted in dry shade or dry spot with sun.   They struggle with sun as young plants but we do have very high UV levels being under the ozone hole.
