Sabine also discovered some CIDPs today in pots which, according to the owner of the restaurant, were overwintered in pots with light heating cables and fleece.

not all of them look good, or what do you think?

How cold does it get during a ‘bad’ winter by the lake? -10C / 14F? Probably a bit lower than that even in 2018 and 2010 surely? Maybe -12C / 10F.

If so, they won’t stand a chance. I have just dug out my small CIDP after 3 winters. Completely dead. Last winter’s -7C / 19F minimum did it in out here in the country with no UHI and no passive protection from me. Butia, Chamaerops, Cordylines etc are totally undamaged. So CIDP are not that hardy in prolonged cool, wet winters. You need winters that don’t go below -3C or -4C, as previously mentioned by myself. My minimums the past two winters were -6C and -7C.

thank you very much, Ben, for your explanations and information.

here is some data.
your experience/facts are correct. i agree with you.
there are good locations, but as with other lakes they are much warmer and better situated for the exotics and these are the exception.

official weather stations had absolute minimum temperatures at Lake constance in 2010/2018: in degrees fahrenheit / degrees celsius
2010:
Konstanz 425m 16.16 / -8.8
Güttingen 443m 15.08 / -9.4
Bregenz 425m 14.36 / -9.8

Egnach 406m private weather station  18.5 / -7.5
Horn 400m private weather station 18.68 / - 7.4

2012:
Konstanz 425m 12.02 / -11.1
Güttingen 443m 12.56 / -10.8
Bregenz 425m 10.04 / -12.2
Egnach 406m private weather station 17.6 / -8
Horn 400m private weather station 17.96 / -7.8

the private weather stations have more sheltered locations, microclimates that are warmer, surrounded by houses and better protected from cold winds. both are privately used davis that i know of.

That's a great pity about your little CIDP. You didn't have passive protection in that case, right?

Hi Mazat,

These lows are not so bad and a Phoenix might survive this but I am not so sure about this data.
When I took a look at a couple of sites, I saw much lower temperatures for your region which a Phoenix is very unlikely to survive.

For example in februari 2012:

Bregenz
4-02:  -20 °C https://www.worldweatheronline.com/bregenz-weather-history/vorarlberg/at.aspx
5-02:  -16 °C https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/austria/bregenz/historic?month=2&year=2012

Konstanz
05-12:  -17 °C https://www.worldweatheronline.com/konstanz-weather-history/baden-wurttemberg/de.aspx
05-12:  -17 °C https://www.weatherapi.com/history/q/konstanz-596563?loc=596563

Guttingen
04-02:  -19 °C https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/@2913298/historic?month=2&year=2012

Egnach
04-02:  -17 °C https://www.worldweatheronline.com/egnach-weather-history/ch.aspx
