A good tray engleri for the cold climate growers out there. Super tough easy to grow palm that’s good for that tropical look in a cold climate, fortunately iam not in that cold climate so these one are destined for the bottom of property where it’s a little bit colder than up the hill in the house garden. Slow growing as seedlings but pick up with a bit of age.

You are right about that , very easy , moderate growth once they get size. They are great palms. They grow in sun or shade and very hardy. I only have one that is quite old. It was in a 15 gallon pot for many years when I got it in about 1993 . I planted it in 1998 in a hot , sunny location. Overall , about 7’ tall. It is now producing fruit .  A very good palm for a fence line , it gets so thick!

You can’t beat them for how tough they are. And cold tolerant making them even more popular with temperate growers. Yet you don’t see them for sale in chain stores, and one of the biggest questions you get asked as a seller is what  have you got that will take frost, easy answer the engleri. You got a nice one there Harry.

Not that it matters for me but do they tolerate salt spray too? Def a palm I wish I had to somewhat replicate the Dypsis lutescens look.

That’s just another bonus for them salt sandy soil and cold tolerance, iam surprised the chain stores havent got them yet. I guess the good old golden cane has won that selection.

Yeah they should be common palms at this point.

I had one in the old garden, survived the 44c heat wave and the minus5c black frost event,  Mine grew quite steadily, far from being slow as their reputation. I think it is the reputed slow growth that stopped them from being more popular.

You can get seeds fairly easily just slow growing. I guess you can’t change the non gardener, they see a clump of golden canes and bingo they have a palm.

There tougher than an old leather boot. And easier to grow than a choko  vine on a Taree toilet block. But unfortunately slower than a wet week. And the general public don’t want to wait for 10 years for a palm to grow, they want it now actually yesterday more like it. As a grower the biggest question I get asked by the buyer is got any golden canes, so now I have to grow golden canes and just a tray full of engleri. They can buy all the golden canes they like it, I got plenty of other slow growing palms much prettier than canes.
