How close to palm trees is it safe to spray weed killer?

and are there any types of weed killer that are safe to spray right around the base of palms?

Can't say how it effects them  -or not-  < Not obvious if it does ..9 years of watching this occur.. >  but the city will coat the bases of all the Mex Fans planted in the street island here blue w/ roundup  ..or whatever they use, 3 - 5 x's a year while spraying for seasonal weeds.  Spray from a truck vs actually spot spraying most of the time too.

Roundup is fine around palms right up to the base to kill something it needs to be spayed on the green parts!! I’ve heard that 2,4-D is volatile so you wouldn’t want to spay it around short plants and especially if it is hot when it would be more volatile!!

@96720 2,4-D is definitely volatile at high temps, but you can spray it directly on palms and it won't affect them.  It's only effective against broadleaf plants, so it'll kill most dicots (oaks, etc), cacti, roses, and many (but not all) broadleaf weeds.  But it won't affect grasses, bamboo, lilies, bird of paradise, gingers, and related plants.  I'm not sure if it affects cycads like Revoluta and others.  I've read reports of "2,4-D damage" to cycads but nothing conclusive.

There's one weed that it won't kill, it just sorta "hurts" it a little bit for a while.  I think it's a type of Oxalis, but I forget the name at the moment.

Personally, I go the non-chemical route.

I asked not long ago. I have gravel 4ft around the base of a few. I pick dry non windy weather and don’t soak. Kills grass / weeds with no ill effects. A roofers torch does wonders as well. Especially after herbicide if you don’t want to pick out the mess.
