Coffs Harbour botanical gardens palm project

Featured Replies

With a truck load of palms being delivered to the gardens in Coffs Harbour. It was time to get planting due to OHS I was not  able to participate in the activities of planting only spectate. But Rick and Toby had it all under control so no need for someone getting in the way. But I will be planting some of the smaller palms that have been donated by Colin Wilson, Lyn Crehan and myself. The plan is get the big ones in and then plant the smaller ones in and around the garden. The planting of the smaller ones should begin next week. So a big thank you to Colin Wilson for donating a truckload of palms in my home town and it’s great being part of a conversation project for future generations. Ps and a big thanks to Jodie the better half for putting up with a palm nut in her life.

Some winners in that bunch of palms. I didn’t see any shovels or sweat in that team of tree planters doing it the easy way. Back in our day Harry shovels and sweat was the order for the day.

Give it a few years and if we can up to 200 varieties in then some garden pop will be coming there way.

For a town in the middle of nowhere Coff's is going to have a very impressive palm collection that any city should be proud of. Colin has been unstinting with time and dedication in his efforts to add rare and not so rare palms to Botanic Gardens in NSW. My city has a botanic garden that could really use some prettying up and many more palms and other plants but our town council doesn't seem enthusiastic. Probably because there's no kick backs or personal glory in it for them. (the last mayor is still in the slammer) Good on Richard too for really getting behind the Coff's project and putting in the work and palm donations to bring it to completion.

Yea , right after buying this house , while I was madly planting palms around the yard , I had a neighbor about 2 blocks away stop by and ask me if I wanted a couple of palms “ only 4’ tall” he says! He told me where they were and said he was leaving on vacation , “ just go over there and help yourself.” I got up early and jumped in my little pick up with a shovel and some burlap . When I got there , there were two large Phoenix Roebelini right up against the house on a steep slope. It took over two hours to dig them out after tying up the d##mn thorny fronds  so I wouldn’t become a pin cushion. Then I had to muscle them up the steep slope with the roots wrapped in burlap ! Sweating and thirsty I went up to my truck for a drink of water and another neighbor came and helped . A very nice set of palms but I worked my Irish arse off for them . Equipment would’ve been very nice to have. Now I look at those palms and the memory of all that , they are very special to me. Harry

Colin approached me about being a local resident for the project. As you  need someone who has some idea of how to really get the best from palms in landscaping. I hope my garden will become a botanical garden for all to see. The curator Rick ackland loves the idea of the project palms can certainly make a botanical garden super tropical looking and an asset in palms for conservation for future generations. I will be donating some of my collection over time on a continuing basis. And if I can I will put Coffs Harbour botanical garden on the palm must see bucket list.

It will be fun and iam looking forward to seeing it through. Hopefully I can get some really nice palms in there too put the garden on the map as destination for palm nuts. And a for future generations to enjoy in spectacle of palms. And it will make a great seed bank for endangered palm species.
