I transplanted a Trachy volunteer earlier in March and soon after transplanting it the spear pulled , but things are looking good now .

My Tifton Hardy palmetto before picture to the right of Shaylen  . It's actually not looking great   :

The spear pull problem  couldn't be from cold with my Low of 14F last winter . Possibly it was damaged 2 Christmas Eves ago when I had a quick dip to 6F . It looks like some nice new growth in the center last summer , but it  didn't look right this March and when I pulled on the spear it popped right out . I cut it back to healthy tissue as well .

Today it looks like it's growing out .

I looked on my other Palmetto last year and saw a little scale . I figured I would spray it eventually , and when I looked at it a few weeks ago it was worse than anything I've seen on the internet about scale on Palmettos . I have sprayed it and feel good that it will grow out of this infestation without any permanent damage to the bud area .

The fronds new fronds are whitish from the infestation . I'll keep on top of that scale . Does anybody have a good systemic ?

Another surprise was this Sabal Brazoria that I have had for 8 years , and I planned on planting it but never felt that I had the right spot for it . I let it get too dry in the house last winter and all the fronds looked dead . I remember what a lot of people have mentioned on these boards about similar palms that arose from the dead , like people throwing out palms on the compost pile and realizing that the "dead"  palm started growing back out  . Well , I kept watering this palm and sure enough checked it and here's what I saw . I'll make sure it has a happy place in the yard this spring .

Another near miss is this Washy Fayetteville that I thought was hardier than it really is being so small . It went through a few 18F type temperatures ( I had it protected during my coldest Low of 14F  but not before all the fronds were damaged and dead . I cut it back to what I thought was healthy looking tissue and sure enough I think it's going tho make it .

Overview ; the Chamaerops next to that Butia is also flowering  :

Washy with protection last winter  :

Yesterday I took off the protection . It'll look respectable in May :

I've never seen that much scale on palmetto. Is that palm a hybrid?

I haven't seen that much of an infestation on Sabal palmettos either . Looked through the internet and saw people with toothbrushes and such scraping off a little  scale but my scale is serious . I'm going to get a systemic insecticide tomorrow . I better not play with this infestation or I might lose that Palm .

The palm is supposed to be from hardier Northern Florida Palmettos . I got it from Lloyds Landscaping in Wilmington , NC .

I had 4 juvenile palms spear-pull and recover after one night of freezing temperatures.  All of them are hardy to much colder temperatures but the freeze was preceded by an afternoon around 90°F.  The Brahea super silver had been in the ground for 4 years and never had any cold damage before.  A Phoenix roebelenii had spear-pulled the previous 2 winters and didn't this time at the same low temperature 27°F.  While trimming some branches and saplings in the back of my property last month I got the chainsaw too close to a pot of Bauhinia x blakeana that I didn't realize was there.  It was put there by the previous owner and had rooted into the ground.  It was cut almost down to soil level and I was about to toss it but decided to water it instead.

Last week I noticed that some rodent had chewed through my best Livistona alfredii seedling on my front porch.  I'm hoping for a similar recovery!
