Hi all,

Last year i visited the island of Madeira. Saw the palm on the picture and was able to get three seeds.

Now i need to know which palm it is.

Any ideas?

Greetings Eckhard

I would guess Chambeyronia but i could be wrong, others will know more i think.  Good luck germinating them!

The seeds are Archontophoenix but not sure of the species.  Maybe A. alexandrae.

One seed already germinated after 5 month. The two others still look good

I think Chambeyronia as well; how about a picture of your new sprout with your hand for scale?

Chambeyronia macrocarpa. Next time throw rocks at the bunch of seeds a great way to collect more seeds, that is providing there is not a car park behind the palm.

I'm afraid the other visitors might have called the gardeners and I would have been fined :crying:

Hi Dave,

I assume there's not much you can see. The lighter as a scale. Second picture is a close up of the part right after ground.

Just tell them you’re a palm nut and they will understand iam sure. Show them your ips membership badge and they’ll understand, walking away saying we got another one nuts about palms. Here’s a picture off box full of Chams for you super easy to grow and germinate.

That's a Chambeyronia macrocarpa all right! I can tell by the speckles and the size.

I've sprouted hundreds so far from my trees.

That will make a great houseplant, though watch out for spider mites. Eventually it will get too big for inside your house, but it will be glorious for a while!

Keep us apprized of its progress!

I didn't need to tell them, while I was looking for seeds on the ground and in the bushes for a few minutes they realized I am.

When I walked down to their official palm area I found a nice Butia with lots of fruits. An elder guy (elder than me) starred at me like I was an alien when I began to eat some fresh fruits. When I walked away I could see he tried one too 😄

Primeval basic survival instincts from caveman man days hey to eat fallen fruit from the gods. We haven’t changed much since then. I collected seeds once at sea world from a cycas near the cafe they looked at me like I was some sort monkey with two heads.

Hi all,

Short update .

20250727_123637.thumb.jpg.8e4a16bf1ce0cb2551eede3055e56b22.jpg

As written I was able to collect three seeds. Et voilà, three little palms. Hopefully I can keep them alive during winter inside.  Will try the same as for my royal palm seedling which already survived two winters.

Currently they are inside as temps outside are to low for them.

Thanks again for the identification.

Hello Eckhard, it's summer, I'm curious to know what temperatures you have in your city

Hi Giuseppe,

Currently night temps go down to 9°C/48°F. And we have a lot of rain and wind.

Eckhard

Thanks, Eckhard.
If I understand correctly, the minimum temperatures are 9 degrees Celsius. If so, they can live perfectly well outside, they can survive down to -2 degrees Celsius.
