Date palms in sidewalk-road median, yes or no?

Featured Replies

I may or may not have too many potted date palms for my own good (about 10). I already have 4 other ones planted too. But anyways I was considering maybe planting some of my developed seedlings somewhere and thought maybe the median between the sidewalk and rode in my front yard would be a spot. My concern though: the palm will get wide much quicker than it will get tall. There is only about 6-7ft of length in that spot. And i’m thinking long sharp fronds will be a nuisance to ppl walking and cars on the street.

What do you all think?

They are only good avenue palms if the crowns are up off the ground and they are solitary.  This usually means getting retired grove palms from AZ or CA.

If these were grown from seed, they'll be a constant nuisance if they end up reverting to their feral clustering form (~98% chance).

Then there is lethal bronzing.  With as bad as it is along the I-4 corridor, municipalities can either plant something else or plan on replacing any Phoenix they plant due to disease.  They used to be a staple here, but are quickly being replaced by Livistona decora, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, and Roystonea regia.

I wouldn't do it because of the arm-shredding thorns and stiff eye-poking leaflets.  You could get away with a Roebellini on a 6' median because the leaflets are soft and flexible...and the thorns are no more than 6-12" away from the trunk.

I'd agree with @kinzyjr on Lethal Bronzing, now that it's made it to my neighborhood.  All the Dactylifera and Sylvesters nearby are dying one by one.  Give it another year or so and they'll be 100% d-e-d.  I finally decided to avoid the "fallacy of sunk costs" and just trashed all my Sylvestris and one Canariensis.  Just because I spent time and $$ on Phoenix palms doesn't mean I should continue trying to grow a palm that's likely to randomly die in the next year or two...

I hope that lethal bronzing will get resolved one day, because phoenix sylvestris is one of the most beautiful palms around.

If you despise pedestrians, Yes, plant.

I purchased a house many years ago that had Sago Palms over hanging my sidewalk. I ripped them out within a year due to the nuisance it caused to visitors, delivery personnel…and my own family.

I would imagine a Date Palm would be way worse.
