The area experienced heavy snowfall (widespread 4-6 inches, a few spots saw up to 8 inches) & atypical lows around 15°F (-9°C) in late January. That would explain the damages.

Did you see any of the trunking Sabal minor in the Croatan?

I did not. All Sabal Minor within the Croatan that I saw were roughly the size of the ones you see in the photos above.

Revisited the Croatan yesterday and took this photo while I was there. Not the best photo quality, but it does show the larger Sabal minor within the forest.

What’s up with all the leaf damage in this picture? It did not get anywhere cold enough this winter to cause damage to wild Sabal minor like it did in 2018 in some parts of ENC. Perhaps flooding? Or is this just the angle?

I noticed quite a few had leaf damage. N.C. has been very dry for several months, and as you mentioned the lows this past winter should not have caused damage. I'm not sure what caused the damage.
