So sorry to hear about your hip. I had a repair done in mine when it broke almost a year and a half ago. Hip pain is consuming , it took months before I could get down the hill to pull weeds around my palms. Now , it looks like necrosis has set in so some of the pain is back, replacement is imminent. I will put that off as long as possible. I hope your husband comes through shoulder surgery ok. Like hip surgery ….super painful!
I remember when you had those Sabal removed , I hope they are ok . If I remember correctly they were going to be re-rooted or something. Harry

Corey told me he hoped to place them on his nursery property. Last I heard they were doing okay. Sorry you ran into problems with your hip replacement. Hip displacement is brutal - pain level 12 out of 10. Hospital won't provide painkillers or even a sip of water. Displacement is rather rare so they make no provisions for it unless it displaces more than 1-2x per year (2x in 18 months for me). I've heard knee replacements get ugly, too. My husband does not tolerate pain like he used to. I learned to be stoic by observing my WWII vet father, whom I never heard cry, whine or whimper. J. Edgar Hoover wouldn't tolerate blubbering, self-pitying, crybaby Agents. Unfortunately that behavior influenced my desire to grab such a wimp by the collar and slap them silly. Wrong, wrong, wrong but so tempting.

no i was not familiar with the story. thank you for this great, touching and true story. simply wonderful.
i was already interested in a sabal palmetto, now i know which one to take first, besides, the hardiness is good for us here. the summers are warm and sometimes humid here.

Here’s some Sabals in Balboa Park, near the east side of the rose garden.  I believe that they are S. Uresana, though there looks to be a little variation between the trees.

Steve, aren't there Sabal 'Riverside' palms near Morley Field in that same area?

There used to be some at Morley Field (Balboa Park), though I’m not sure if they are still there.  They’re more on the north side of the park, not far away.

Talking about Sabals, can anyone help me ID my two juvenile ones? Color is more on gray-green side than in picture.

Southeastern Palm Society winter meeting at the Georgia Coastal Botanic garden. I mainly took pictures of the sabals there, I missed a few for sure. We were given the tour by the 2 guys who planted all these sabals over 20 years ago, some 30 years ago. IMG_2129.thumb.jpeg.8392d8c114799d4ace71da5c40a74c71.jpegSabal minor TX hill country, this will become important to refer back to in a minuteIMG_2130.thumb.jpeg.bfaeca8034215956691ddc0e421049fe.jpegsame Sabal minor as above close up of baseIMG_2131.thumb.jpeg.50e2df8bfa4ce7027d31f62024bb3f0c.jpegSabal Birmingham there’s 3 in a group here and three directly behind me in a group.IMG_2132.thumb.jpeg.9c1cf704fba876a0913f8846d06ad37f.jpegSabal etonia IMG_2133.thumb.jpeg.a70f19e8e4cbf2046275b276d09f00b1.jpegSabal mexicana IMG_2134.thumb.jpeg.69d06b59ad23a6d640de21c9249587f4.jpegSabal minor Cape Hatteras. The TX hill country minor is about 5 feet tall, the Cape hatteras minor is overhead about 10 feet tall both planted at the same time. Nice seeing different sabals planted close to each other. Differences like this really stand out IMG_2135.thumb.jpeg.ecc96399a43a265a442ee23bb41c2ddc.jpegFull view of the Sabal minor Hatteras IMG_2136.thumb.jpeg.8687effe30d11aa45c34e7aae256283d.jpegSabal Louisiana. I’ve heard there’s more genetic testing being done on all bunch of sabals. Hopefully it will shed some light on palms like this where there’s been much arguments over the years. I know it’s classified as a variation of Sabal minor but my eyes tell me it’s something different IMG_2138.thumb.jpeg.6d3b21d01d8a728fd80ccd35be9964bb.jpegTrio of Sabal Louisiana IMG_2137.thumb.jpeg.e95c117f7ef1a8d06aa9e8d3049f2636.jpegSabal causiarum. So for the real palm nerds this causiarum is portraying the lisoid cupped/ fused leaves like Sabal palmetto ‘Lisa’IMG_2144.thumb.jpeg.2479ebcd9a428425cbe10a9fa55a8197.jpegSabal palmetto var Bahamaniensis aka parviflora. I immediately thought this was a Sabal bermudana but after some discussion the inflorescence and seeds are directly in line with palmetto. This may be the prettiest Sabal I’ve ever seen. Really elegant, clean ringed trunk. Wide stiffer leaflets than typical messy floppy palmetto. IMG_2145.thumb.jpeg.4a82abebc57e9f7aeff99205b4fa7ac5.jpegI believe this is green Sabal Uresana IMG_2147.thumb.jpeg.c89d4a9809d57f008d30e49c34d52417.jpegSabal mexicana left and Sabal palmetto right
