Is there a good palm tree book that someone recommends? Not necessarily an identification book, but one with different varieties, nice pictures, native/cultivated range, interesting facts, etc.

One book!  Well, that’s how we all started, and now we need extra shelves because, let’s face it, next to actual plants nothing better than palm books. But here is a good start; a true encyclopedia and a terrific tome on landscaping with palms. Of course I’m biased, the authors include IPS board members and even a past president.

The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms by Riffle, Craft,  and Zona. The best general information and great pictures!

There are plenty of books that offer what you are looking for . Most of the ones I have are rather old and , as we all know , names of some have been changed. This is one of my favorites. HarryIMG_0364.thumb.jpeg.c21c71d04f1df23c8660f1d836018f41.jpeg

Which one is best for advice on how to grow each palm successfully? Something with tips for each species maybe?

Zone 9b: if you love it, cover it.

Buy a printer with refillable ink tanks and print as many topics, as you can in PalmTalk!

Not specialized but as a handbook of general guidelines the Diamond Lane Guide by Don Tollefson.  Participating in local palmsocieties is also invaluable. Don Hodel is also a scientist who combines usually practical horticultural advices with taxonomic main work. At least so in his book on Chamaedorea genus.

Thanks everyone. Books are requested interlibrary loan so I can check them out. If I like them enough, I’ll buy them. Apparently, Pennsylvania libraries don’t have many palm books.

Also, The Tropical Look by Robert Lee Riffle is another gem. It goes into tropical looking plants as well as palms, but is written in the same style as The Encyclopedia- very wonderful descriptions in both books. Tropical Look is not specifically JUST palms, but they're included. I think you can find used copies pretty cheap these days on ebay or wherever. I picked up a backup copy a few years back because my original was getting trashed. Wasn't too painful on the pocketbook...

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

I'd add Palms Won’t Grow Here and Other Myths: Warm-Climate Plants for Cooler Areas – David A. Francko to this list

Yep, that’s my own personal palm bible, along with https://www.palmpedia.net/palmsforcal/Category:Palm_Genera

Add Palmtalk search and I’m off to the races!

Book-wise, the “Designing with Palms” is my personal favorite, since I’m most interested in palms for landscape design.

Oh and I enjoy some of the YouTube videos. 😊
