Would planting more palm trees on city streets help prevent the spread of fires?

Just to get a few things cleared up: California does controlled burns all the time. I'm not sure where the rhetoric comes from but it sure has a big audience. Second, CalFire will let a fire burn if it's not threatening the human population, not sure where that rhetoric comes from either, but we don't put out every fire. That would be impossible. Again, for those unfamiliar with the terrain - try extinguishing a wildfire in the deep sierra at 9k feet in elevation, far from any roads or access points. Those fires will burn all summer and they'll be extinguished by winter snows. I know because from my home in Fresno I see plumes of smoke coming from the Sierra all summer long most summers.

Acreage as a percent of total land area is still fairly low in comparison to other states.  Second largest state, something like 15th highest burned acreage.  Considering the dry climate, overall forest cover and population living in the urban interface with fire-prone ecology, I'd expect it to be the highest or close.  Speculation on my part but it seems reasonable.  For the record I have no political take on this issue.

It's worth noting that California isn't the only state bothered by wildfires. South Carolina governor declares state of emergency as raging wildfires prompt mass evacuations

Praying for you-all in SC! Don't be afraid to pray for us back. We'll all need it.

I'm not sure anyone wants this thread revived, but the NYT had this headline on their site today and I thought it would be of interest. It's behind a paywall of course, but if you're a subscriber, check it out.  The story also linked the doc in the attachment, from LA County. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/climate/los-angeles-rebuild-wildfires.htmlimage.thumb.png.1d87a1cbd58815e576b39e46e00de259.png

Yike! Ham-handed and incomplete. Washies and similar are fire hazards; kings and Rhopies are not.

Oh yeah, this is one of those multi faceted fraught topics, where everyone is tight and wrong at the same time, depending on the circumstances.
