Johannesteijsmannia Altifrons starting to germinate

Featured Replies

The 500 joey seeds I purchased on the 26/11/2024 are starting to pop up. Taking roughly around 5 weeks one box I placed on bottom heating the other 6 boxes went into the hothouse inside plastic bags in there boxes., both are germinating at the same time. So you really only need a warm environment to germinate them there quite easy. I won’t start to pot them up yet I wait for the first spike or leaf to appear before I transfer them, joeys are so easy to grow just don’t damage there roots and everything will be fine. Iam pretty confident in growing joeys I done a few before so another batch of 500 seeds should give me at least another 300 more joeys if all goes well.

Do seedlings grow better in a deep pot?

Yes in a deep pot not so much wide but definitely depth. And on bench’s or off the ground you don’t want the roots growing into the ground, they need to air prune, you tell a Joey you’re going to pot them up and they die of shock just being told about the traumatic event ahead. After I pot up established seedlings I get the odd one that just dies for no apparent reason I can only put it down to transplant root shock.

Thank you for responding. Do plants in 3 or 5gal pots need to be off the ground too?

I would not let my joeys get there roots into the ground if in any container any size. They dislike roots being broken.
