On site palm tree protection best practices

Recommended Posts

Hello - I am working on a project with numerous palms on site and want to preserve them through construction. Does anyone have rule of thumb for how large the protection area should be? Do they follow conventional tree protection measures or do they have a smaller footprint due to their root structure? Any information would help!

Thanks

@Hdavidos3 Could you post photos of the palms in question?  Some are more tolerant of root disturbance than others.

@Hdavidos3 as Kinzyjr mentioned, some palms have a tendency to die if too many roots are cut.  Others don't seem to care at all.  Many fan palms are more root susceptible, notably Bismarckia.  If you have a species list the people here could narrow down "protect" vs "don't worry about it" easily.

I used a saw to cut through some roots when I put a pathway down the side of my house and installed new drainage system. I was really worried about my King Palms and the rest but nothing even phased the palms. That said, there are some palms that would not have survived . I was expecting some loss but I guess I lucked out! Harry
