Tennessee's Tallest Palm...

Recommended Posts

I am convinced this windmill in Chattanooga is the tallest palm in Tennessee. In my estimation it is nearing 30' tall. It (along with the others) was planted 21 years ago.  A pretty good rate of growth. Thanks everyone.

They're beautiful! Are they in a public area? If they are where are they located.

I'm not sure if the trachies in the first post on this thread are still alive, but if they are they might take the award for tallest TN palms.

Looks like they were planted in 2003 which is same as when the trachy in OP's post was planted.

Those are nice but the ones I posted are against a 3 story building, for scale.  Well 2 1/2 now that I looked at my video again...

I was referring to the one on the right side. The left one is shorter and isn’t a competitor for what you posted. Also these pictures are almost 4 years old so if this one is still alive and has kept growing the top of the trunk is likely at the roof line

That's pretty impressive regardless of which is the state champ. I see what you're saying now about the one on the right, an absolute beauty too! I was at work earlier and didn't have much time to take your post in.  I'd love to see them in person as well. I wonder if the past couple severe winters have harmed them. Are you aware if they protect them?

Hopefully @Mr.SamuraiSword can chip in on the status of these palms and whether or not they get protected. I'm guessing they are not though as he had posted in that thread about how they had been severely damaged a few different winters. Probably in 2014 and 2015 when it got down to 4F and 2F

Also It looks like the 2 previous winters before these pics were taken only got down to 16F in 2019-2020 and 11F in 2020-2021 so it's definitely plausible for them to look like this in spring 2021 with zero protection.

@DreaminAboutPalms They were somewhere in the range of -5'F in the winter of 2022-23. Probably low single digits this winter as well.
