Never thought I would see a Butia this far north in VA. I wonder if they protect it. Looking at the other dates, it looks like its been there for a bit

Charlottesville is a zone 7a/7b climate I don't know if they protect it 'cause if you go down the road a little, you can go to a 2023 Street View and then I zoomed in and it looks like it's kinda damage in the photo.

a really wonderful yard. after looking the climate and absolute minimum temperatures in the wintermonths, frostdays i think butia will probably protected.

Here in my usda zone 8a, we had one which we protected but it didn't make it, nor did a friend who lives even closer to the lake.

our sommermonths are much colder ...

If it is an unprotected Butia, this would be the northernmost, inland one I know of. Which is surprising since Charlottesville is nothing like the Hampton Roads climate where Butias are common palms

NC_Palms: yes, i'm surprised too, although to be honest i've just seen the charlotteville climate data.
yes, if the microclimate is right why not, plus it will protect the owner if it gets really low below 0°C i suppose 🤔

i won't try it again at our location, the last butia was a gift from a colleague who lived in lugano, so it's all the sadder that it didn't work out😞

Very nice yard! I need to check that out next time I'm there. I've been looking for more palms in Charlottesville, would love to know of any others in the area. The only one I know of is this nice windmill I came across in a backyard. I was there in the middle of winter and it had no protection.
