Another palm i germinated from seed they took a while to germinate with bottom heating but they got there in the end. A large growing palm with  a lot of needle sharp spines but I like dangerous palms that will bite you eventually no matter how carefully treated. Looking forward to seeing these ones grow in the ground in the years to come. They have lived in the hothouse for a couple of seasons now which surprised me that they made it through untouched by winter.

I think the spines on some palms are there to protect from rodents and predators eating the fruit . Unfortunately the spines also work on humans! Good looking young one. Harry

Pretty sure there there to protect the palm from critters. They also do a good job at deterring human activity on and around them. No matter how careful you are sooner or later ouch. My niece grab the bactris gassipaes in my garden by accident. She went to doctors to get the spine’s removed. Even the doctors wanted to know what the palm was she touched.

She lived so it couldn’t have been that bad.
