Bottle palm help

Hi I live in Long Island New York

To start I’m not very good with plants in general. I purchased a few palms to stay in pots for my backyard this summer I have a few questions and was hoping someone could help.

The seller told me to pull off the fronds when they look yellow and brown. As I bought this one with one frond in that condition , it did not seem right to me to cut it off so I left it all summer. A new one grew and now a second Frond  is turning that color. Am I doing something wrong.
any help would be appreciated

I will be bringing all my palms indoors for the cold weather very soon it’s been fairly warm up till now 60s and 70s in the days  to 40s to 50s over night

the last pic I included I’m hoping to confirm the other tow palms I purchased are Christmas palms

I would only be concerned if new fronds show yellowing or browning. I’d only cut fronds when they are completely brown.

Many palms like this tolerate brief cold spells overnight, as long as the temps warm up to the 70s fairly quickly.   In comparison, here where these grown in the ground, it will fall to 40s overnight for perhaps only a couple nights in the dead of winter.  But most daytime temperatures in January and December will still be in the 70s and 80s.

Im not sure how much prolonged cool weather your palms will tolerate, but keep in mind that prolonged cool temperatures will kill palms, just like a night of freezing.

If you are planning to overwinter, you might want to move these inside now.

If there’s green on the fronds, most of us would leave the frond on until it goes brown.

Your potting mix for these shouldn’t be potting soil, but something light and airy that you’d probably have to mix up yourself.

Those other palms do look like Christmas Palms to me (Adonidia merrillii).

Those are 1000000% Christmas palms in the last pic without a doubt! The shape of the leaflets and the growing point "look" tells me its a Christmas palm and no palm that is cultivated in the US at least, Has that characteristic Christmas palm look.

The Christmas palm looks better than the Bottle palm. One of two things.

1. Too much sun. Most plants are grown under shade that helps them green up. When moved out into direct sun, the established leaves cannot take that intensity.

2. Too much nitrogen fertilizer.

I like the basket-look to the pot there.  Those don't look that bad at all.  You can just fine tune things for the potting situation from here.

I think it will be a challenge to give these enough light to keep them looking healthy through winter . The warmth is only part of their requirement, light and humidity are also needed. These are tropical plants , not the easiest to maintain where you are. Harry

Hello,

I am not an expert on the bottle palms but i have been watering some in very large pots (maybe 25").  They are in all day direct sun outside in Orlando and also get the yellowing turning to brown leaves.  I cut them off when they get bad, but only maintain about 3 to 4 nice frawns regularly.  During the winter i'm almost garaunteed to have almost all the leaves go brown, but they have come back.  Out of 4 total, I did have one die after several years. I hope this is helpful, if only to know that the frawns yellowing with brown tips is normal.

Another thing yellowing and browning is normal if they are leaves that are at 90

Bottle palm cold damage in Orlando?? oh wait never mind umm so yeah about cutting fronds off DONT! palms use energy from the dying fronds to make new ones wait till it is completley brown and you can pull the frond off without cutting it it helps it i was visiting my Mimi in FL and i saw her bottle palm where part of the crown shaft was ripped out just cause the frond was barely darkened i will show you a pic its bad lol.

It looks like a Ravenna but it seems to have a crown shaft. Fuzzy photo so it is hard to see . Harry

If these are potted, they must come inside when temps drop to 40°. In the summer, I would place them so that they're shaded from about 2PM onward.

Thanks SeanK.  That is useful, unfortunately though, these are at a commercial property where moving them is not possible.
