When planting out young Date Palms, is there any way to identify whether they are male or female ?

Only if they were started from cuttings of known parent trees. Otherwise,you'll have to wait until they flower.

It absolutely does not guarantee any success, instead it may serve only as a guideline: individuals with few to none suckers tend to be male, while other with a very intense caespitose habit have many chances to turn out female.
