Best palms for zone 5-6

Looking to plant palms in pots for our pool area in the summer and move to garage or indoor for winter.   Is there a palm I can use for this zone?  I live in Michigan. Have Cold winters but do have a heated garage to keep plants in during the winter.

Finally, another person from Michigan! So you DO have a few options, which is the Needle Palm, Sabal Minor, and maybe a windmill palm but i’ve never had experience with those. You could even plant musa basjoo banana trees if you want a more tropical vibe too.  But since you said you have a heated garage you could probably just get more tropical palms in pots and just put them around the pool if you wouldn’t want to protect the hardy palms from a zone 6 winter.

Thank you for your response.  Good to know I have a few options. The banana tree sounds interesting.  I appreciate your input.

Here's a good place to buy sable miners and  Needle Palms. I have bought from this place before and it's high quality.

Since it will be in a pot, one suggestion that isn't too large to move around using a wagon is Chamaerops humilis if you can get a decent sized one.

I have overwintered Alocacia m. here with success. If they're staying in pots, I would look for some less tender palms nonetheless. Chamaerhops h., Phoenix roebellini, Chamedorea (microspadix and radicalis).

Rhapis Excelsa do well in pots and can handle indoor life.  Just make sure to acclimate them slowly back into the sun or they'll cook.  Chamadorea are another great option, lots of varieties and most stay reasonably small.  They also tend to be understory palms so if you have full sun around the pool that may be an issue.
