A palm paradise in northern California

My wife just showed me this article . I have never heard of the garden , perhaps some of you have. Interesting that such a beautiful collection of palms is in a location not often synonymous with “ tropical”. I hope it is ok to post a link to this article . I think it may be of interest to fellow palm enthusiasts. Harry https://www.aol.com/northern-california-home-world-famous-195350658.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=ma

Been there 50 years. I didn't notice the size of the property but it must have a couple acres. He probably paid $150K back in the day.

The key:

The remarkable collection of rare and sought-after palms was created by Richard Douglas around 1975.

Dick Douglas ( @PalmGuyWC ) was a regular on the forums and is missed very much:

Dick hosted some wonderful Palm Society meetings and I was fortunate to be able to attend one of them several years ago. I was able to purchase one of Dick’s ‘Mutant’ Chamaerops seedlings and it’s growing happily in my backyard today.

I visited in October of 2010 yesterday and forever ago. What a helluva garden that was, no two ways about! Mr Douglas was wonderful too, and I was treated like royalty by many Nor Cal Palm Talkers.

Also present was Patric Shafer, with a flock of his famed hybrids, which I bought a bunch of and filled up the interior of the infamous Green Monster, my 1993 Lincoln town car. Some of those palms grace my garden today.

Hope the buyers like the place!

Dave, I had the pleasure of meeting you there. I can’t believe it’s been fourteen years!

Does anyone have an album / thread showing photos from the property? I've seen limited glimpses in the past.

Unfortunately never got to meet Dick, but his garden was a major source of inspiration. Both his and Patrick Schafer's exploits with cocoid hybrids encouraged me to create my own, with plenty of invaluable advice from Patrick along the way.

I sure hope the palm garden is preserved by the new owners.

For those of you that frequent Facebook, I’ve set up a group called “Pommy palms”, where many of the palms I’ve seen since emigrating to Australia have been documented. If you wish to be a member, copy and paste “Pommy palms” into Facebook to view the page and click “Join group”.
