Queen palms survived 0°F in Bakersfield, CA on Jan. 28th, 2017 ?

I was looking up some record lows in Bakersfield,  CA and it showed me lots of hrs of 7°F to 0°F on January 28th, 2017. How is that possible that Bakersfield didn't experience any palmaggedon ?Screenshot_20240904_201840_Chrome.thumb.jpg.42b957db2d39e6a4e1e97de0aace370a.jpgScreenshot_20240904_174404_Maps.thumb.jpg.6e1858178a35f9a55ca8e6644a4be849.jpgScreenshot_20240904_174404_Maps.thumb.jpg.6e1858178a35f9a55ca8e6644a4be849.jpgScreenshot_20240904_174351_Maps.thumb.jpg.44fe23ff4c30158e8acdd28ecc16ff8f.jpgLike nothing has happened.  Am I misunderstanding some data or what's going on ? How can Queen palms and Washies survive those temperatures but here in Texas Queens would be all dead . Help me to understand this phenomenon . Is the data wrong ?

Trust the palms. They had a zone 10 low on that date.

Weatherunderground is a tool to enable a hoax.  My American feelings.

That said, your source published false data for Bakersfield, CA.  Screenshot_20240904-195324.thumb.png.2d5884a4a50dff873e1f47a491bb8434.png

The sensors sometimes show false data which is what it looks like here.  The temp went from 55F to 6F to 59F

I have noticed that the Weather Channel and other weather apps have become increasingly inaccurate lately . Last winter , in my area , several times I saw “frost warnings “ and it didn’t drop below 42f . Now , we are in the middle of a heat wave and the weather apps are showing 97 degrees for my area and it was 85f . No doubt it is warm out and it will be warmer the next few days but the temps that are listed are quite a bit different than what is actually happening. Sometimes they are ok but a lot of times they are not . Local knowledge is best . Harry

Even NWS records are occasionally inaccurate imo...I've seen airport stations down for hours with missing daily logs where the data gets filled in after the fact in the historical data with numbers of questionable accuracy (seemingly copied from a nearby station?).

I don't claim myself a palm expert , I guess you guys already know that but there's no way Queen palms would survive 0 to 7 degrees for hours.  Before weather data gets published shouldn't the data be reviewed before pushing the "Enter" button?

According to NOAA the low was 34F.  So the Queens survived 34F

Some sites do correct known faulty data. Some don't. Hence my remarks on weatherunderground.

But you knew and were questioning, whether you realize or not, that makes you somewhat of an expert.

Ultimately the data is probably captured realtime from somebody's backyard w/o human intervention.

Exactly this...but is is free/open access at the end of the day. The Davis Vantage Pro2 stations are usually more reliable but not always.

For official data you can request free records from NCDC sent to your email. For quick lookup the best source is NOWdata from the local NWS page.

Thank you Jonathan,  I will look into that to get more accurate weather data . Thanks a lot again. 🙏

This is the website I used to get prior data.  I usually look at the daily values by month.  It shows a low of 34F that day.

At least the historicals at NOAA.gov will place an "M" for missing data. No way the queens sailed through z7a temps.

Weather Underground is based largely on backyard personal weather stations. It's useful for giving you an idea about how the temps vary in your region. It is not at all scientific. We have a local station that is obviously in a south facing wind trapped deck or something. It's consistently a few degrees warmer than others nearby. Meanwhile, the NWS only has a few stations, typically downtown and the airport, and isn't that useful either. My 2c.
