Winterization Ideas Windmill Palm Zone 7a

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I have asked in other groups and there has been response sadly :( I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to protect windmill palms in the winter time? I would like to create this sooner than later as I have a busy fall ahead of me. Any ideas/instructions are much appreciated! Thank you all!

Small enough to build a box with plastic walls and a light bulb inside.

Yes , agree . It is worth the effort and a light bulb inside the enclosure might be enough warmth to keep it. These are very hardy palms. Harry

Years ago, I had 3 in the ground. I used leaf cages for the first 3 or 4 Winters. They worked quite well. Then I ceased protecting them and they did fine. Until the Polar Vortex of 2014. Killed all three.

Now I have just one in the ground. It is in my "Zone 8 microclimate"- southern location next to the brick chimney. The leaf cages take a lot of work so I have been lightly wrapping it in burlap and placing a trash can over it. Worked well, but now is too big for the can. Last Winter I took to using Christmas lights. So far so good.

Thanks Allen! I seen in previous posts you made a cylindrical enclosure. Can you elaborate on how you made it? Is it 24in diameter?

In your zone the box method is preferrable.

I would suggest a boxed in palm, with a removable top, for ventilation on warmer days...here is mine, were not in the same growing zone

I have 2 windmill palms I planted this spring. I’m in NJ 7a/b and trying to figure out the best way and when to winterize these trees. We have been experiencing an unusually warm fall but tonight it will drop to 30. I plan on mulching around the base a few inches thick and wrapping in burlap. Until I can get a good idea on what to do.
thanks.
