Data Point on Bald Head Island Sabal Palmetto Cold Hardiness

A while ago, I was researching Bald Head Island Sabal Palmetto cold hardiness and came across this 1976 study of seedling establishment from Sabal Palmetto from different parts of the east coast. They mentioned a Sabal Palmetto from Smith Island, which Bald Head Island is a part of,  that was planted in Goldsboro, NC in 1910. I've attached screenshots from the study below.

Another Palm Talk post from 2018 seems to have found it on Google Maps, but it didn't mention the history about the palm, so I figured I'd add to it.

Looking at the weather history of nearby Greenville, NC (closest airport), it seems like the palm has survived several years where temperatures dropped to 5F or less. I thought I'd share this since there isn't a lot of data about cold hardiness of Bald Head Island Sabal Palmettos.

This isn't surprising. There are large palmettos that survived a low of 0f and a week below freezing in the Greenville area during the winter of 2018. We have large palmettos here in Raleigh that survived a low of 4f during that same winter.

I posted a picture and info on an old palmetto from Calabash planted in Albemarle, NC.  I used to live a couple hundred feet from this palm.

God bless America...

and everywhere else too.
