I need some tips

Recommended Posts

I don’t have much experience with growing palms let alone in Zone 7a. With that being said, I would greatly appreciate some advice. My main problem I seem to be encountering is that the leaves yellow and brown. I have tried moving them in a spot with a little more  shade, changing the frequency of times I water them, and some of those spikes. There has to be something I’m not doing right. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

can we get a full picture of the pygmy date and majesty? If just a few leaves of the pygmy date are like that, it looks fine to me, but we can only see half of only one leaf.

also get a picture of the soil. Same thing with the majesty, can't tell what's going on from only seeing one part of one leaf.

What's your concern with the sago palm (which is a false palm)? It looks completely normal

Here ya go. My main concern is the spots on the majesty and the browning on the Pygmy DateIMG_8517.thumb.jpeg.72a1a93c9eda4796cbb6531d2de6d182.jpegIMG_8516.thumb.jpeg.826ef8ae043f523e3d08a41c351ab992.jpegIMG_8515.thumb.jpeg.dc404720dd188aa40b6bd34e3a0b22c0.jpegIMG_8514.thumb.jpeg.3830c86579a7e8258eec5189c1de4bf2.jpegIMG_8513.thumb.jpeg.e266670952137961c0401b57003966fc.jpegIMG_8512.thumb.jpeg.35c87749866e85255ad6fc951af005ec.jpegIMG_8510.thumb.jpeg.1ef3a100a166faeddeb2d4e92e8cfb89.jpegIMG_8509.thumb.jpeg.ba35eb21fa455e997d39f42337709927.jpeg

I wouldn't worry too much about the pygmy date's leaves. My guess would be it needs a little more water or that it's been somewhat sunburnt. I assume they've all been outside for a month or two by now? Are multiple new spears emerging from each bud? It looks normal, honestly. Probably can up the water. They enjoy big gulps of water like many palms, especially now when it's their growing season. There's a chance it could use some magnesium or plant food if you haven't given any this season. But overall, mine has a few leaves like that. I don't bother about them. One of the individuals in the cluster has been putting out new leaves that start yellow and then fill in green from the central veins of the leaflets. 🤷‍♂️

And like I said earlier, you sago looks like it's doing great.

I don't know what's going on with the majesty though. That one is definitely off and concerning. It should have bounced back by now if the issue was just spending the winter inside. I dunno about that one, honestly. Soil doesn't look mucky or insanely dry. I wonder if it's a root issue or a watering issue or sunburn....has it been pushing new growth? If it's just declining not growing anything from the center, I would suspect a root issue. I don't think that one is underwatered. Is it overwatered or maybe root rot? Hopefully not, hopefully someone else recognizes what's going on with that one.

PS: Nice garden! Love the red adirondack chair and the watermelon mat

Thanks! Well the Majesty has grown some new leaves this summer. As for that concerning leaf, it seems to be getting worse. I will have to do more research into what is going on with it. Thanks again for the information!

Do you the majesty might need fertilizer? I have had the majesty and sago for a year and have not fertilized them because I do not know which to use.

After a year in their pots , there could be some deficiencies. You can fertilize using Ozmocote , Palm Plus , or Palm Gain . Follow the directions on the fertilizer and don’t over feed . Usually mix in the soil and don’t let the fertilizer bunch up around the stem , apply to damp soil will help. That Majesty could use some shade with a bit of filtered light to darken up , it is still quite young . The Pygmy would also look better with some shade / filtered light. Finally , keep an eye on the drain holes on the bottom of the pots . When roots start pushing through , it may be time to bump up to a slightly larger pot . Smaller increases in size ( mainly deeper) are better. Try not to mess with the roots when repotting. Harry

Majesty might need more shade and the pygmy can be in full sun but needs water maybe every day in 90F+ temps.  I would add a bark mulch up to the top of the majesty and pygmy pots.  I recommend osmocote plus outdoor/indoor for the majesty and pygmy

It will keep your pots from drying out as fast and help regulate soil temps.  I personally use the big chunk pine bark nuggets in my pots on top.

Try using liquid fertiliser every third watering in summer like some seaweed extract or fish emulsion even a foliar feed once a month good luck.
