Areca palm shoots/runners

Recommended Posts

I am not at all an expert. But I've had what I think is an Areca Palm for around 13 years. Within the last year or two, it's started sending out shoots or runners from dirt at the edges of it's pot. They continue to grow slowly and new ones appear over time. See photos.

  • What are these shoots/runners?
  • If they are related to reproduction, is there a way to propagate them?
  • Is this in fact an Areca Palm?

Any insights would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Those viney looking things are not coming from that palm. I don’t know what they are but the seed could have been spread in the wind or in the any soil you might have added.

Whisk fern,  Psilotum nudum..

Can't tell you where they might have come from, but won't hurt the palm..  Not sure how you'd weed them out from the rootball if not wanted.

A lot of folks actually  grow these as a specialty plant.

Interesting... I'm not sure where they could have come from since it hasn't been repotted for at least 7 years. But good to know they are not harmful.

And thanks for confirming it is an Areca Palm. It must be positively geriatric, as I understand their lifespan is normally around 10 years. But it's still regularly shooting up new fronds. Not bad for an Ikea plant left for dead by an ex's roomate way back in the day.

Thanks all!
