Hello everyone, can anyone give me some suggestions of the best fertilizer/plant food for my potted palms, I have a cat Palm, a parlor Palm and a Majesty Palm. I'm trying to bring back to life... I live in Ohio so I don't know if that matters but any suggestions? I'm looking everywhere at so many different brands and I'm so confused and don't know which one to get.. heeeelp!!! LOL

depending on what's going on, fertilizer/plant food will not bring them back to life. In Ohio, spring or summer is the only time of year I would apply fert/plant food, and only apply a little, very diluted amount once a year for small palms. A 30 gallon container can probably deal with fert/plant food maybe once in spring and again in late summer. And hopefully they're outside this time of year, when they can enjoy the climate they like. If they're outside and get rained on, they can also handle a little more fert/plant food, but in general soil moisture levels, temperature, humidity, and sunlight factors are more beneficial for palms than fertilizing

In the first five years after I bought my new house I used Palm Plus back when it was an Apex product . I did that because the lot was a “cut and fill” with a lot of rocks and debris from the builders. I was sure the soil was whacked so I used a lot of mulch and garden top soil mixed with Palm Plus 3 month time released fertilizer. I was very good about doing that 2-3 times a year . Now , 26 years later , I only fertilize the palms that could use a boost . I still mix the fertilizer in garden soil prior to distributing to the palms . I have been using an E. B. Stone product that works well . My Roystonia , Ravenna , Chembroynia, and Cocothrinax are responding well. I started up in fall of last year to allow the winter rains to soak it into the root ball. Then , when Spring and Summer come , the new growth shows signs of healthy fronds. Harry

Less is best for palms a light seaweed extract with a couple of waterings a month in hot weather you cannot force feed a palm to make it grow just like a new born baby especially if your trying to revive some sick palms it could a soil problem that could be made worse y fertiliser with strong fertilisers so a little goes a long way in correcting the problem.

I suggest that you bring them outside in high shade or morning sun. Majesty is tough to keep looking good. You might replace it with a Spindle palm.

If you do use a fertilizer then you should settle on one kind and preferably a slow release. And make sure you read the directions as most fertilizers will be overkill unless they are formulated for pots. On the other hand no nutrients will also quickly kill a palm. (Infertile soil). Best thing to do if you don’t want to measure and do some math is to buy a premade potting soil for palms.

Lowest seen: 16F, Highest seen: 105F. Heavy red clay (iron oxide). Amended to 6.5-7PH using Dolomitic lime. (No yearly fertilizer for lawn, just for independent plants).
