How much less hardy are Trachycarpus & Chamaerops in containers vs. ground?

I rent a room in a house with 3 other mateys including the owner.  I have permission to grow a palm...in a pot that is.

I would like to know how hardy Trachycarpus and Chamaerops are when potted, and how to protect them in winter without bringing them fully inside at room temperature.

Also curious how large a palm can get in a large pot 16-20" wide.

Do not leave pots outside when temps fall below freezing. The palm stems and crowns may take colder temps but you do not want the roots to freeze solid. So, forget about how cold hardy they are because pot culture limits you.

The bigger the pot, the better.  A good general rule of thumb would be it's going to be a 1 zone to 1.5 zone difference between pots and in the ground.  So, a plant hardy to around 15 might be only hardy to 25-30 in a pot.
