They're native here, we get a lot out bush (not the variegated ones). Do see the variegated ones sold in nurseries.  They like a lot of water, their roots are usually in creeks and they climb high into nearby trees. Unfortunately the Wallabies love eating them and have wiped out most of mine in the garden.

Below: the tree on the left and some on the right are covered in it.
