Aa recent post by Tracy and a response by Dale concerning Chrysalidocarpus pilulifer, jogged my memory about the recent naming of C. paucifolius, aka ‘Orange Crush.’ The old name is so catchy, the correct one doesn’t roll off the tongue quire as easy.

Anyway, here are a couple of specimens that are showing that trademark orange crown shaft. The small one is growing in almost solid rock, the larger one with a fair amount of soil. They are the same age.

These are the type of pictures that made Jeff some good money off of me, mine is small but im hoping it will one day be like yours.  I had to change my tag too which was awesome to do. I bet some would be annoyed but im thrilled it has a name.

Beautiful palms in an equally stunning garden backdrop Tim.  The renaming of palms as the mystery of their identity is revealed, is further complicated if you aren't sure if the label when originally acquired was the accurate name at the time.  Such is the case with my palm you reference in your opening post.  The timeline for palms to develop beyond the juvenile stage here adds to the requirement of patience to grt a real id.  I readily admit to jealousy when it comes to how quickly things grow on the Big Island.

John, thanks mate, you’ve seen these guys many times.

Dale, all good here. Been off island for a month, the frond drop and weed explosion were things to behold. Only 20” of rain in May. (508 mm)

Mike, hang in there, these are relatively tough palms and should pick up speed as they get older.

Richard, what would your ‘thousands’ of seedlings do without you?

Tracy, I thought it had a new name and had to do a bit of research to refresh my memory. Thanks for the kind words about the garden, just full of ‘happy’ places.
