Great story of the Judean Date Palm (Extinct for 2000 years, but brought back!)

Many of you are probably familiar with this, but this is the first time I've come across the story of the Judean Date Palm.

Quite a bit of discussion of this on here going back to 2007... while germinating a seed that old is no doubt amazing, I've always been skeptical of the "bringing back an extinct plant" aspect of this story - seems like marketing/media hype. A bit of genetic variation from 2000 years ago, sure, but at the end of the day this is more like rediscovering an old heirloom tomato variety than it is to Jurassic Park.
