I stopped by my local nursery in Ventura and they had a couple of these Syagrus Schizophylla babies. The palm guy at the nursery said they are cold tolerant enough for my place and start them in shade to filtered sun. He said they will tolerate sun when they get older. It’s nice to see smaller palms (affordable and easier to plant) available. Most of the nice stuff they have are larger and way more $$. Any tips on this palm? Pics of larger ones? Thanks , Harry

I just thought I would bring this thread back to see if there are any of you that are growing these . From what I’ve seen and found out (Palmpedia) it should be great here in Southern California. I will look for a semi shady spot this weekend and let it  grow! Harry

Here are some of my seedlings, very slow growing 4 years from seed. They get good light, even sun, and yours compared look very stretched. I would slowly put them in more light

@Tomas thank you . Yes the nursery that I purchased it from told me shade grown and should remain in filtered light for some time. I plan on planting it under some large canopy palms. The tag in the pot dates this 2018-2019. The thing is , it will eventually want some sun . For now I will treat it like a Chamaedorea. Harry

Richard , I think I will plant it this weekend. I am thinking about down by the large Brahea and Butia . It would allow for plenty of light with filtered shade from the larger palms. Thank you so much for the feedback. Harry

That’s the best idea anyone has come up with plant your palm this weekend but I never need a weekend to plant a palm anyday is fine by me.

IMG_4016.thumb.jpeg.d14e87855ddc159ac25dc8c7843a5a51.jpegWell it found a home! I waited until mid day to make sure it would have the perfect amount of shade to start its new life on my hill. The Butia is happy to have a pup to look after.  Nice damp , well amended soil and just the right amount of shade. To the left is a nice Brahea Armata tall enough to cast a shadow as the sun makes its way west. I don’t think it will see much direct sun . Nice one Harry the only problem I see is that there is more planting space for more palms looks like your going back to the nursery for a few more palms.

Richard, you were thinking what I was thinking. I will be going on a palm hunt soon! A certain PT member has some interesting stuff and I am dying to go see him . I could probably even plant a Rhapis down there. I have one that I divided last year . Maybe I’ll take it down there tomorrow! Harry

I planted a one gallon from FB in the ground last year, mostly in a full sun - partial sun situation in Santa Ana, CA. It’s doing well, it’s growing new fronds, slowly. It is fairly yellow so I do think I pushed it a little far with the sun, but it’s growing, so I’m not too concerned. It was acclimated slowly before planting.

That’s encouraging. I was told to give it mostly shade. Harry

Hey Harry, meant to post these photos a couple of days ago of a S. schizophylla in the garden. Probably 10 years old and it’s gotten as wide as it is tall. I believe it’s the only Syagrus that is armed.

Look closely in the first photo on the left side of the trunk, there is a shovel with an orange handle for scale.

Tim , that is amazing! I think here in Southern Cali it will be somewhat slower. The one I just planted was dated 2018/2019 , I’m guessing that’s the date from seed. I will enjoy watching this one grow. Thank you for the photos that gives me something to look forward to in the coming years. When I first started collecting I couldn’t wait for the palms to get large , now I’m finding that the slow growers are just as rewarding. Harry
