Building exclusion netting for blueberries on a large scale

Featured Replies

When iam not at home doing my garden and nursery in my spare time I have a job on a large blueberry farm doing whatever has to done on a commercial farm and building exclusion netting for birds so they don’t eat the berries it a very labour intensive job with two people working on top of frame on the back of a vehicle with a driver along side with  my left hand man Stephan from Vanuatu the project is approximately 12 acres in size with me being the foreman and the brains in charge it’s a fun job with the odd bit of danger with everything under extreme tension so much so we even pulled a pole out of the ground on this job we basically sew a wire into the net then we lift the net with cross wires then  tie the wire and net at one end tension the net wire the other end of the runs to the poles it spreads out like a sheet then we winch the the net and wire to the internal poles and clip them off all about 4 metres in the air just like fencing only 4 metres up it sounds easy but a bit of knowing what to do helps it all goes easy until you get a problem like a broken wire or net that’s to short along with other  problems you have to think on the go to solve them and after building around 500 acres of netting over the last twenty years you soon learn how to solve problems i also build hothouses which has given me a great skill set for building my greenhouses and hothouses for my palm nursery when I have some spare time which is never but it’s a great job with a office with a great view all day long outside.
