canary island date palm from seed

Featured Replies

I im starting my first palm from seed. its a canary island date palm. Ive NEVER had success when planting anything from seed. (especially palms) so i would like to know any tips for planting canary island date palms from seed. thanks!

They're pretty easy. If you want to do it right, put them in zip lock sandwich bags in a 50/50 mix of peat and perlite on bottom heat at 30C (86F).  If you're feeling lazy, put them in a pot of seed raising mix somewhere warm and keep them moist...if your summer is stinking hot, put them outside in the shade somewhere and they should come up OK.

Can take a couple of months.

Good luck!

South Arm, Tasmania, Australia - 42° South

Mild oceanic climate, with coastal exposure.

Summer: 12°C (53°F) average min, to 21°C (70°F) average daily max. Up to 40°C (104°F max) rarely.

Winter: 6°C (43°F) average min, to 13°C (55°F) average daily max. Down to 0°C (32°F) occasionally, some light frost.

Important point to remember is NO direct sun if germinating in a bag or box. It would cook everything for sure. Also, germinating media can't be too wet either. That usually rots the seeds. Very easy species to sprout if the bare minimums are met.

Yeah, these ones should come up like weeds no matter what you do to them. Plant them in soil, or throw them into a ziplock bag.

Species I'm growing from seed: Verschaffeltia splendida, Chrysalidocarpus leptocheilos, Licuala grandis, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, Johannesteijsmannia altifrons, Bentinckia condapanna, Livistona benthamii, Licuala mattanensis 'Mapu', Beccariophoenix madagascariensis, Chrysalidocarpus decaryi.
