Butia Growth Rate

Featured Replies

How fast should I expect this Butia Capitata to grow after it establishes itself?

It will probably grow slowly in your area . There could be set backs from any winter extremes. Here in Southern California they are moderate growers and in 20 years you would probably wish you planted it further from the deck. Where you are it would be longer . They get pretty large once they form a trunk. This one was a lot smaller than yours 25 years ago. Harry

Did I read that right in your profile, Michigan???

If so I'm assuming you are going to try and protect it in the winter months?

Mine here in NE Florida went from about that size to the picture below in about 8 years...and I agree with Harry, too close to the porch.

You both have nice looking Butias! I'm going to protect it of course along with my Needle Palm which has been there for a while now. By too close to the porch, do you mean that when it gets larger the leaves will start to spill onto it?

Why not keep it in a container?  This is one palm that actually does well in a pot with minimal space for its roots.  You could keep it in that same spot and move it around as needed.  It would be much easier to protect in winter that way.  Even if you keep it in the ground it won't grow as much with your extended winter.

Or do the buried  pot so it looks like it’s in the ground, then just bring it in during the winter.

I know keeping it in a container is wayy easier, but I really wanted this one in the ground. Plus, I already have a smaller Butia in a pot that will be in there forever. I don’t mind if it grows slow of not, I just want to put something thats not as hardy in the ground, since I know how to protect these things now.

Exactly!  :) Only issue with that is if it tries to root in through the drainage holes but Butia don't seem to mind root disturbance much.

The trunk is larger than a Brahea and the crown will take up part of the deck. Butia need a lot of room. That is why mine is planted down on my hill. Harry

In that case it will be fine. There won’t be substantial grow in the next couple of years where you are. Harry

Where you are at slower than me but here is mine growing over the years.  Hope it does well.  It will need good protection to survive.

@Allen great video! Pretty good growth for where you are. Harry

Slow to moderate growth rate depending on location , watering , fertilizing.

MIne in Oregon went from about 4' to 14" in 7 years, but they grow year round there.
