Trachycarpus folding fronds?

Recommended Posts

Hello, how come my fronds on my little Trachycarpus are folding? They are still growing and each one has new spears coming out, also why do some fronds bend?IMG_0617.thumb.jpeg.eb71ac4af73b1974852a82e876048908.jpegIMG_0620.thumb.jpeg.807684c6af8f62c72fcd941251879c4b.jpeg

Nature is not as perfect as we want it to be.

Bending is very common and normal. It usually happens due to wind. It is likely more prominent in shade grown trachycarpus with less compact fronds. It should not hurt your palms.

The lengthwise folding can be a response to: higher light levels or can be due to root dysfunction/injury from transplanting, overwatering, underwatering. I think the higher light levels in your case.

It’s been inside most of this time, only outside for an hour around 3 o clock every day until now where these past days it’s been outside longer. As for watering, I water when the top inch is dry. I doubt overwatering. I hope it’s not a root injury I was gentle

I have seen that kind of folding on my trachys for a variety of reasons. Increased sun, after extreme winter cold, or even when I have let them get too dry.  Since they used to be inside, the increased sun exposure may be the reason.

Is there anything recommended that I can do to undo it? I want to leave them outside all day and night in the future, so I can move them in the shade in the afternoon so they get morning sun only

Reduce light exposure. Pick them up and use their weight to determine need for watering.

I’m not really sure how to determine weight to me they always feel heavy 😂 I think I’ll water tomorrow the top inch is dry and it was hot and dry today I’ll check again tomorrow for the top 2 or 3 inches

If you bought greenhouse grown seedlings or the soil is too dry, the leaflets will fold up.  Lack of available calcium in the soil will cause the leaflets to weaken.
