Very distinctive.

Looks like an alien trying to grab my finger to me.

Anybody want to name the palm?

"Feed me..."

I wouldn't put my hand in there. It looks like it could talk as well as bite.

A female Wallichia densiflora which is now lumped in with W. oblongifolia, which itself was previously known as W. oblongata. Gotta love name changes.

Great photo Cindy. My W. densidflora is also female and produces those “horror movie” inflorescences but I’ve never thought to photograph one at that stage. Will have to check mine periodically to see if it’s showing and red fangs. :)

Thanks for the photos happypalms.

I agree with everyone that the inflorescences are perfect for horror movies.

I am working in this area so here’s a photo of the whole palm.

Methinks Audrey is a wee bit hungry!!!  :D

I managed to find two of these from NatureGirl about 3 or so years ago.  I planted one about 3-4 feet from the edge of one of my pathways.  That might have been a tactical blunder.  But the good news is they are pretty hardy!  The in ground one took no damage from the below cold front, but it was protected from frost by an overhead Butia.  The other is still in a pot because I haven't figured out a spot for it yet.

I will go with the consensus here as to the species, however it must be a particularly stupid specimen !  Nobody falls for the old 'grab my finger' trick anymore.
