I want to try planting Pygmy Date Palm in NJ, US (zone 6a/6b)

Hi guys,

I haven't tried planting zone 9 palms yet, but all my zone 8 palms did will last winter in boxes (+mulch, +heating cables/Christmas lights).

So I think I could try planting my Pygmy Date Palm (which is zone 9) ?

I think the worst case scenario - it can lose some leafs? I can also try adding more mulch and maybe a 2nd heating cable/Christmas lights row).

Btw, I didn't see a big difference between using heating cables and Christmas lights. I did an experiment and used heating cables in half of my palms and Christmas lights in the other half of my palms. All did well and the monitors didn't show a big difference in temperature. But heating cables consumed less electricity. All electricity in heating cables goes to heating, while in Christmas lights part of the energy is "wasted" on light.

Planted palms: Sabal minor, W. Robusta (Mexican Fan Palm, my favourite!), Windmill, Pindo, Needle, European Fan, Sago palm, Saw Palmetto, Pygmy Date palm

Inside during winter: Majesty, Cat palm, Chinese fan palm, Mexican Fan palm

i grow them in 9a and some actually die, you may want to get a really mature one and protect it harder than the others. although my friend (“new york tropical garden” on youtube) has one that is doing better then mine! so yes 100% possible.
