Howdyall:

Went out on a crazed drive-by photo session in East Los Angeles yesterday.

East LA is an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, just east of the Boyle Heights section of the City of Los Angeles.

Back in the 1920s and before, ELA was home to a large Jewish population.  After they got some dough and went to the West Side (Hollywood, etc.) of Los Angeles, Latinos, mostly Mexicans, moved in.  Many descendants of the original residents, as well as new immigrants from Mexico make ELA like a part of Mexico.

The fact that the area is unincorporated also made it a popular place to locate graveyards.

Here is a Catholic cemetery.

IIn the section near Whittier Booley, most of the houses are very small.

This one probably would sell for about $250K, unless it's on a big lot, in which case it would sell for more.

Here's a papaya plant, in the middle of the picture.  It's full of papayas, as you can see if you look closely.  Papayas were all over the place.  Some, like this one, were bushy; most were single-trunkers.

Neat pics dave. Why are you hanging out in graveyards?

I wish my papayas were looking good. There on a slope which menas that they don't retaing a lot of water and are pretty spindly looking. there is a huuuuge papya tree at a friends house not more than a mile away that looks like it just flew in from Hawaii.

Nice driveby Dave!  Did anyone duck when you drove up slowly and pulled out your camera?  East L.A. has so many tall Phoenix and Washies that it's pretty cool to drive through.  I wouldn't recommend it if you're not familiar with the "hood" way of life though.  I've heard many stories of people getting lost down a dark cul-de-sac and getting car jacked.  I've been pulled over and "detained" just for being a white guy in East L.A. near the "pueblos" (slang spanish for projects).  They suspected drug activity.  I was taking a girlfriends car to a friends auto shop.  But make a stop at ...bertos (fill in the first three letters), meet the locals, and have a nice fat burrito while checking out the old houses and tall palms and it can be a nice experience.  Thanks Dave!

I was super discreet.

People get really squirrely when you take their pictures, so I planned each shot, made sure my escape route was planned.  

I also did my best to acquire that Cheech Marin look, so as to blend in a little bit.  Though I guess my face is a bit red to be a Mexican . . . .

Cops do get a bit wierd about white guys in the 'hood.

Some of my classmates at Loyola Law School (which is right on the edge of Skid Row) got quizzed a lot by rookie cops who didn't buy the "we're law students" story, which was true.

Don't know the burrito joint, but there's lots of them.

East LA's cool, in its way.  I almost bought a acre there.

250K for that little house.   That house would go for about 40-50K here.  Maybe less.
