Arenga engleri 9a success

They really are underrated palms. My inland location is a 9a, worst winters are upper 20s with highs around freezing for a couple days. This is just after I moved them last October from our last place, which was more coastal and urban. Two of them are growing now and two are languishing. Probably transplant shock rather than freeze damage as we had no severe cold this year. My queen palms also look ok.

@JLM they are one of my favorite hardy feather palms.  They are pretty slow growing in my yard, but not glacially slow like Chamaerops or Copernicia.  I bought my first one as a 3 gallon around 2018, and it's now around 10 feet tall and a big cluster around 8-10 feet diameter.  Once they get established they form a nice dense cluster, and the silvery undersides of the leaves are really cool.  And you can cut them back to be a solo/double/triple if you want.

The only downside to me is that each trunk only grows to maybe 6-10' tall before flowering and dying.  If you want a slightly taller sight/sound block it probably won't block a neighbor's 2nd story window.

Just ordered a 1 gallon off Etsy. I guess if I’ve gotten ballsy enough to try R excelsa and C macrocarpa in the ground then this shouldn’t be a problem lol

I guess this whole 9a thing has gotten to my head and now I’m trying to push more 9b palms even though the 9a’s are still a push at times. I may be 9a now but the past two winters were 8b.

I considered my self a warm 8a prior to the zone change, now I’m officially 8b, but still think I’m marginal. My past two winters have been 8b as well. I put an Arenga ryukyuensis in the ground yesterday, I’ve read they’re slightly more cold hardy. 🤷‍♂️

Once acclimated to the sun, I have a spot for this palm.
