Need some help. I have two potted bottle palms, one is 5 years old, other is 3, both have same soil, light, pot and watering/fertilizer schedule.

Both have new growth since November, both lost a frond in December. Problem is the oldest lost another frond in January and the new growth is half the size of the younger tree and the trunk looks alot slimmer than it used to be.

Any ideas or suggestions?

How much light and heat does it get?

It's in a south facing bay window, indoors with temps never under 70 degrees

There is now a soft spot forming on the bottle!?

I remember seeing these in Hawaii and then again when we went to Tahiti . I talked to my local palm guru and he advised against trying one here. Like the Licuala , without a greenhouse , I will admire from afar!

So I pulled him out of the pot today and found a section of roots that were hallow, dry and brittle.  Could this be the problem? If so, what happened and what can I do to fix him?

Heat sun and water. Not a good indoor choice.

How different are bottles and spindles? My spindle is doing better as a houseplant than it's ever done outside... But to be fair when it was outside, it was on a patio in Texas with crazy stupid heat.

Similar but I think spindles are a little better with cold. At least that is what my observation in my area is. There are more spindles than bottles very few mature bottles.
