Spear Pull on My C. Humilis

Recommended Posts

So about 2 weeks ago I repotted my C. Humilis to a bigger pot since there was a lotta rots coming outta the bottom. All was fine until I tugged on the spears of the main trunk and the two newest fronds came out. There was a third front that was open which was fine. The 3 other suckers were fine, no pull on any of their crowns. I'm not too sure what went wrong, possibly the stress of being repotted and it took awhile for it to show symptoms? I did a few spear tugs to see if it was stressed and no problem until now. I poured hydrogen peroxide 3% into the crown and pulled the gunk out, not much came out. I watered it when it was repotted and I have a small space heater that keeps my room warm to about 24C-28C every night, which i don't mind because I love the heat. The first week I didn't have the heater and my room was consistently 21C. Maybe the water didn't have enough time to dissipate and cause root rot? All the fronds are a deep green since I added a tiny bit of fertilizer, 9-3-9 + Micros slow release. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

What kind of soil did you repot it in ? What kind of light exposure does it get in the house ? Sounds like you have done all the right things. Tough palms for sure tho.

Cactus soil from miracle grow, I know its not the most ideal soil to get in bulk. But I don't have space nor the need to buy bulk soil and mix portions on my own since I only have a few palms.

It gets a south facing window, i leave the blinds open and the window cracked about half an inch, enough to let airflow in. I have grow lights that I leave on for about 10-12hrs each day except when its real sunny.

@Ivan604 Wow youe definitely doing everything right. Im not sure how root sensitive this palm is , maybe there is some root sensitivity there. I bet it comes back.

I can tell you that Trachycarpus pushes new growth after spear pull in June, here in Atlanta. That is in-ground with afternoons in the 80s, F.

I cannot speak for Chamaerhops, except you will have to be patient.
