McCurtain Sabal Minors

Any idea where I can find these palms in a decent size? Seeds and tiny seedlings probably take forever to grow. Anywhere I can find a gallon or so? That would probably be easier to establish.

Just as FYI, there is a folder for this:

Also I would say good luck, only one source that I know of.  He does have seedlings listed right now, in the past it was only seed.  I always started my McCurtain from seed from here.

I'm working on getting some of these started now.. it's ironically enough one thing I haven't had a chance to start... but I am!  I've got a few growing outside, and they are small'ish right now, but they get very large.

I hope you can track some down. This is an awesome cold hardy palm…somewhat more compact than a Sabal minor, darker/bluish in color and more rigid.

This one is in, guessing, 50% shade most of the year, given its situation…amazing in a small space what a few feet can do…the taller Chamaerops beside it gets much more sun. Anyway, it’s been in ground 8 years or so and never protected. Would probably grow faster if it got more sun but as is, very slow. However, I’ve noticed deeper establishment and more concentrated watering seems to speed growth a bit. But I tend to let my palms alone where watering is concerned, unless it gets really dry. Then, I’ll get the trusty watering can out and give it a couple gallons…surface soil around it is loamy and porous. Can’t remember where I ordered this from but it arrived as a 2 or 3 strap strapling. Here’s a couple historical pics:

Best of luck rounding some up.

This is absolutely why I am doing what I'm doing, and a few others as well.  When I started out trying to find 5 gallon, or bigger sized quality Sabals, especially more rare ones... good luck... even now... good freaking luck!  A few of us are hoping to change that game because seedlings are slow, but, you do get the benefit of them growing and getting acclimated in YOUR weather versus someone's greenhouse.  There is a lot of value for those that can be patient, and grow them out.

Reminds me, I need to soak and get these McCurtain seeds in a community pot.

We have several for sale in Lawrence ,KS if you look up Kansas Plant Farm. I can say from personal experience they survive much further north than their native range.  In zone 6a they grow very slow...barely replacing freeze damaged leaves each year but on a south side of a building they will eventually get big enough to set seed. And that is the real treat...possibly even more cold hardy genetics. We have been experimenting with these over the last 15 years and Plant Delights Nursery sold some of our seedlings a few years ago Sabal minor 'Lawrence'. These have unknown genetics but hardy enough to survive as low as -18F with no mulch on a south side of a building.

Plant Delights Nursery just posted some for sale as part of their 2025 catalog. They’ll be strap leaf size though.
