Nice little palm from peninsular Thailand/Malaysia. Not a rocket ship, but a steady grower and I’m thinking a bit on the finicky side if all the requirements aren’t constant. Nice color and leaf shape.

Very cool palm. Looks great as an understory for the tropical garden. The color and leaflet shape is unique.

Something I was aware of but haven't articulated in the past is that your growing environment allows you to rely more heavily on palms for variety of shape and size.  I know you have many non palm companion plants in addition.   In less tropical environments there are obviously fewer options for understory palms, forcing one to add more non palm plants to create variety.   Tim, such a problem you have.  Do you add more understory palms from diverse genra or exotic tropical non palm plants?  Having visited your garden I know you have struck a beautiful aesthetic balance.

Keep sharing these uncommon understory palms.

Hey Tracy, thanks for the thoughtful message and your observation of the garden. Seeing your lovely garden is still high on my ‘bucket’ list.

Living here in East Hawaii, with such a diverse and available selection of tropical exotica, finding canopy and understory garden specimens takes some effort, but not much. Many of my understory palms were acquired by accident, because of color, leaf shape, or habit. while shopping for other specific varieties on the list. The beauty of living on this island is the exposure to splendid, well grown, unusual, and rare varieties, that with a bit of patience, and luck, can be found. I’m normally not one that seeks the rarest of the rare, but when you see such ‘killer’ varieties happily growing in your climate and available, being decisive is second nature.

Since I happen to be all palms all the time, a lot of my exotic non-palm plants are gifted from garden friends, many active on this board, who kindly share gems that fuel their passion. Passion and sharing are the keys, without them what’s the point?
