Sabal palmetto zone 7a

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I live in zone 7a U.S east coast and I just found recent interest in Palm trees. I found a Sabal Palmetto "Augusta" that is for zone 7b, so how will I have this palm tree survive with minimal protection without any electricity? Give some tips how to grow and will it survive with protection on coldest days.

Mummy wrapping seems to work well, as is done on this big one in zone 7a Bridgeport, Connecticut. It is mummy wrapped without any heat and has been there since 2009. This one is in a great microclimate, against a south facing wall near the water. Utilize microclimates in your yard, such as a wall for wind protection and insulation. That bit of "natural" protection makes a big difference.

OK you have one thread that say's you're 7b and another now 7a.  It would clear things up to know your exact city.  Anyway in 7a a palmetto that you never plan to heat will likely suffer some years that set it back and you would be advised to plant these if you don't plan to heat - Sabal minors first then needle palms then Sabal brazoria, Birmingham and Louisiana in that order.  The palmetto above is in a really picky microclimate and will take you about 20 years+ to get one looking like it.
